| Sažetak: | On the construction and readin gof stars : Extant contemporary discussions of film stars, although frequent in academic writing, rarely take into account the intriguing context of the classical film studies (Enno Patalas, Edgar Morin). In addition to that, these discussions frequently fall prey to simplistic socio-cultural explanations as well as to excessively personal preoccupations (e.g., feminist or queer critics' interest in Judy Garland). Stardom, however, appears in art-cinema as well as in the commercial mainstream cinema, thus indicating the danger of socio-cultural cimplifications and the need for serious rethinking of the entire concept. This is discussed on the example of Tomislav Gotovac, a conceptual artist and experimentalist filmmaker who takes great pride in being "on the margins" of society, with additional example of Nastassia Kinski, a star for sophisticated elite. Furthermore, the mechanisms of actors' stardom seem quite similar to the mechanisms operative outside the realm of film actors - some directors and directors and/or producers (Hitchcock, Selznick, Kubrick, Spielberg) have also proved capable of achieving stardom. The general principles of popularity within the elitist arthouse cinema circles gear the comparison with the most commercial trends very well, so the idea of the "reading" of the star as a text seems analytically very potent, insofar as it resists the globalizing Anglo-American trands in adacemic writing by taking into consideration the classical (filmological) context of the terms it uses. The artcile commends Croatian filmology for taking that context into account. |

| Sažetak: | Film stars - the types and the typological systems (the caseof the American male film stars) : The author discusses the typology of American male film stars, based on the typology models from the works of classical continental authors, such as Enno Patalas and Edgar Morin, as well as from more recent works of authors such as Richard Dyer and Donald Spoto. However, these studies have been revised and supplemented in this syntheses. Six basic types are considered in this study, the first of which is the man of action, represented by Douglas Fairbanks, Errol flynn, John Wayne and Arnold Schwarzenegger, one of the two most persistent male types in the history of the American cinema. The second type is the stranter, which can be divided into the Latin lover represented by Rudolph Valentino and Ramon Novarro, and the (Anglo-Saxon) gentleman, represented by John Gilbert. the third type is the good bad guy of the gangster hero, represented by James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson and Clint Eastwood, while the fourth type is the guy next door (e.g. Clark Gable, Gary Cooper and James Stewart), the latter being one of the most persistent and popular types in the American cinema, with the man about town, represented by Cary Grant and Fred Astair (in musicals), as its possible subtype. The fifth type is the lost one of "the loser", personified by Humphrey Bogart, while the sixt type is the rebel without a cause, personified by James Dean who starred in Nicholas Ray's 1955 film that gave the type its name. The rebel without a cause (also represented by Montgomery Clift, Paul Newman and Marlon Brando) is the last fully structured male type in the history of the American cinema and also the type represented by the youngest stars and the youngest characters. |
